Tattoo Removal

Laser tattoo removal is a popular and effective method for eliminating unwanted tattoos

How laser tattoo removal works

Laser tattoo removal utilizes advanced laser technology to break down tattoo ink particles in the skin. The process involves the following key steps.

Laser application

A specialized laser emits high-intensity light beams at specific wavelengths that target the tattoo ink. Different wavelengths are used to treat different colors of ink. The laser energy penetrates the skin and is absorbed by the tattoo ink, causing the ink particles to shatter into smaller fragments.

Ink fragmentation & removal

The body’s natural immune system gradually removes these smaller ink particles over time. Macrophages, a type of white blood cell, engulf the fragmented ink and transport it away from the skin.

Multiple sessions

The process is repeated over several sessions to progressively reduce the visibility of the tattoo. Each session targets the remaining ink particles, leading to further fading. Before starting the full treatment, a patch test is typically performed. The laser is applied to a small, inconspicuous portion of the tattoo or nearby skin. This helps assess the skin’s reaction to the laser. A waiting period of 24 to 48 hours is generally recommended to observe the skin’s response. If no adverse effects are noted, full treatment can proceed.

Number of session required

The number of sessions needed for complete or partial tattoo removal varies depending on multiple factors. Tattoo characteristics, skin type and location, laser technology and expertise and health & immune system. On average, most tattoos require between 5 to 10 sessions for significant fading or complete removal. However, the exact number may vary widely based on the factors mentioned above.

Maintenance + Care

The sensation during treatment is often described as similar to the snapping of a rubber band against the skin. Topical anestheticsor cooling devices may be used to minimize discomfort. Each session typically lasts from a few minutes to an hour, depending on the size of the tattoo.
Redness, swelling, and mild blistering may occur immediately after treatment. These are normal and usually subside within a few days. Patients are advised to keep the treated area clean and protected from sun exposure. Specific aftercare instructions will be provided by the practitioner.
The tattoo will gradually fade over several weeks as the body clears the ink particles. Full results can take several months to become apparent, depending on the number of sessions and the body’s response.
